Ministry of Labor Commits to Resolving Issues for Y&W Garment Workers

Phnom Penh, March 13, 2024: The Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training has pledged to address the grievances of over 4,500 workers from the Y&W Garment factory, who are currently protesting due to unpaid salaries after their employers absconded. Amidst growing concerns, the ministry has taken proactive steps to alleviate the plight of these workers.

Collaborating with the court, the Ministry of Labor has initiated measures to seize all assets belonging to the Lai Long factory, with the intention of ensuring the timely payment of all outstanding dues to the affected workers. Additionally, the ministry has assured workers of their entitlement to other benefits and has vowed to safeguard their interests during this challenging period.

In a bid to provide long-term solutions, the Ministry of Labor has committed to facilitating new employment opportunities for the affected workers. Collaborative efforts with relevant authorities and ministries are underway to apprehend the factory owners and pursue legal action against them, ensuring accountability for their actions.

Emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach towards employer abscondence, the Ministry of Labor has underscored its unwavering commitment to holding responsible parties accountable, regardless of their whereabouts. Furthermore, the ministry has cautioned against any form of incitement to engage in illegal activities, reiterating the importance of upholding the rule of law.

In a reassuring message to the protesting workers, the Ministry of Labor has urged them to maintain composure and trust in the ministry's efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis. Workers are encouraged to register for new job opportunities through the National Employment Agency and continue utilizing their medical cards as usual.
